Berkhamsted bagged a crucial 2-0 win at table-topping Ampthill Town to complete an impressive league double over their SSML Premier Division title rivals.

The Comrades’ victory narrows the gap to five points at the top, and Mick Vipond’s side also have a game in hand over the league leaders.

Leading scorer Connor Calcutt broke the deadlock in the 13th minute by instantly controlling a cross from the right by the recalled Dan Griggs and turning to smash a shot past the startled keeper.

A superb pass up the left wing then released Josh Chamberlain who stayed ahead of the full-back and netted with a low shot to double the lead before the half-hour mark.

Berko were good value for their half-time lead, enjoying passing on a better playing surface than they have had in recent away games.

Comrades keeper Carl Tasker had little to do in the first half, but Ampthill manager Craig Bicknell’s half-time rollicking meant the home side came out battling in the second half and Tasker produced a string of quality saves.

The Berko defence were kept busy but the visitors still looked dangerous when they did go forward in numbers.

Ed Canham blocked a shot painfully and Lewis Rodrigoe got a yellow card as the pressure mounted.

Both sides used substitutes and, while Frankie Jowle went close for Berko, Ampthill got even closer with a 35-yard thunderbolt that struck the post before rebounding into Tasker’s arms.

Another Berko substitute James Towell went down in the box but appeals for a penalty were waved away as the game came to an end.
