The Hemel Camelot third XV put in a dominant display as they romped to a 48-0 victory over Old Ashmoleans.

Ashmoleans could only field 10 players so Hemel loaned John Gunstone, Sean Brennan and Dylan Bransgrove to the opposition to even the sides at 13-apiece.

Both sides started strongly from the Hemel kick, but some early big hits from Damian Knowles, Tom Frost and Declan Weed kept Ashmoleans pinned in their 22.

The Camelot pressure was relentless against a dogged defence from Ashmoleans, but strong yard gaining runs by Craig Meddeman and captain Charles Riches eventually created a gap for fly-half Tom Batson to break the deadlock on 25 minutes.

With Old Ashmoleans reduced to 12 men through injury, excellent rucking from the Hemel forwards saw Knowles increase the score to 10-0 with an outstanding individual effort in the corner.

Hemel dominated the line out through Aaron Austin, allowing Jamie Beck and Aiden Walsh to create perfect field position for a narrowly missed drop goal attempt by Knowles.

Despite faltering discipline from the home team inside their own 22, Hemel were able to repel repeated spirited attacks from the visitors and further pressure from Lee Wilmot, Rob Miller, Finn Bannon and Frost saw Hemel go into the half-time break 22-0 ahead with a second try from Batson converted by Knowles.

Hemel’s Lee Wilmot sportingly switched for Gunstone in the Ashmoleans pack at half-time, with Gunstone coming back over to Hemel.

But disaster struck for Ashmoleans from their kick at the restart of the second half, when Robin Hawkins broke through for his first try inside five seconds.

Hawkins scored a further two tries in quick succession, leaving Ashmoleans in disarray and disheartened, and two further scores by Meddeman and Knowles saw Hemel to a very convincing 48-0 victory.
