Sweet revenge as Hemel Storm slay the Warriors

Hemel Storm avenged their Trophy defeat by Westminster Warriors earlier in the season when they blitzed the home team in the third quarter to earn an 80-71 win in National League Division One.

Hemel led 30-26 at half-time in a defence-dominated clash, but came out after the break determined to dominate at both ends of the court.

They forced the Warriors into ball handling mistakes, while guards Bode Adeluola, Nik Rhodes and Walid Mumuni were firing on all cylinders.

To the delight of their traveling supporters, Hemel opened a potentially game-winning 60-40 margin going into the last period.

Joint top-scorer and co-captain Mumuni was the spark that Storm needed as his outstanding individual defence and accurate shooting inspired his team-mates and triggered the third quarter dominance.

Earlier in the season Hemel had lost narrowly in overtime to the Warriors, but coaches Dave Titmuss and Dave Allin had done their homework this time around.

“We let things slip in the fourth quarter,” said Allin. “But we knew the game was in the bag and we did experiment a little with different combinations.

“They also hit a three-point shot on the final buzzer that we didn’t challenge so without that we would have held them under 70 which is excellent.”

Titmuss added: “Walid (Mumuni) was simply magnificent. At times he seemed to be everywhere on court at the same time!

“The kind of leadership and individual performance he produced can really lift a team and while it’s unusual for us to single out one player, I think everyone recognises the contribution he made in an all-round team effort.”

The victory moves Storm up to fifth place in the Division One table.

It keeps them on track for their goal of qualifying for the end of season Championship Play-Offs.

Team and scorers v Westminster: Mumuni 15, Rhodes 15, Adeluola 14, Darlow 9, Adorian 8, Kearney 7, Edwards 4, Wood 3, Percival 3, Josey 2, Allin, Rodwell.

Storm have two home games this coming weekend at Sportspace when they take on Tees Valley Mohawks at 7pm on Saturday and the following day play Lancashire Spinners with an early tip-off at 5pm. Weekend concession tickets for the two matches are available at www.stormbasketball.net
