LEVERSTOCK Green prepared for the Herts Charity Cup Final against Conference South side Bishop’s Stortford in the best possible fashion after securing their first win in seven league games with victory against Harefield United.
At the time the Gazette went to press, Green were preparing for their biggest test of the season as they faced a Stortford side who are three divisions above them and were the highest seeded team in the competition.
However, this week also marks manager Steve Heath’s last two games in charge of the side, and he admitted some of his playing squad are probably looking forward to the end of the season.
He said: “The players aren’t fresh, and they look tired after a long season.
“They’ve played too many games to cover the injuries we’ve had.
Despite that, however, the Levy Green boss admitted he is pleased with the way his side have kept battling at the end of the gruelling campaign.
“The win has come quite late, but we’re starting to see the squad back together now,” he said.
“We were pleased because it’s been coming – it was just a case of us not getting the rub of the green in our last few matches.”
A place in the top ten of the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division is now up for grabs thanks to substitute Lewis Pritchard’s goal in the 68th minute on Saturday against Harefield.
The club’s top-scorer has notched 18 goals this season in 52 appearances, also a club-high.
In what was their last home match of the season, it proved to be the difference.
Speaking prior to the Charity Cup final, Heath added: “If I’m honest I don’t expect us to win tonight but I hope the players give a good account of themselves.
“Stranger things have happened. We’ll go to win the game.”
Following the final, Leverstock will turn their attention to this Saturday’s fixture at second-placed Dunstable Town
The team will hope to finish off their season – and Heath’s time in charge at the club – on a high.
